  • Use an incubator cover or cot canopy to shield babies from phototherapy lights if they are in close proximity but not undergoing the treatment themselves.
  • Refer to manufacturers’ guidelines for the safe use of specific types of phototherapies.
  • Document any alterations in phototherapy treatment, such as additional sessions or the current plan for allowing the baby out from phototherapy, if applicable.
  • Keep parents informed about their baby’s progress.
  • Support and encourage parents to engage with and care for their baby during phototherapy.
  • Staff should be aware that as a baby’s bilirubin levels decrease, parents should have more extended and more frequent opportunities for cuddling and kangaroo care, depending on the baby’s condition.
